Old-fashioned Soon Yi marries into a family in the country without love. To make thing worse, her husband, Sang Gil, cheats on her and decides to abandons him by enlisting into the Korean Army. One thing leads to another and Saeng Gil is moved to Vietnam. Knowing that her husband is moved to Vietnam, her mother-in-law forces her to go to Vietnam and finds him. Soon Yi herself wants to show that she is capable of loving her husband. She uses her vocal talent to join a band and heads to Vietnam. She sings for the restless soldiers in hopes of meeting her husband while on tour.
In 1970, Korea sent their troops to fight alongside America against Vietkong. So that is the set of the movie. However, according to the director, the movie isn't free of the ideological ideals. The director said that in most Vietnam War movies, which are American, we tend to sympathize with the U.S. and it doesn't affect us when Vietcong fall dead.
As we all know, most works of art and literature are told from the point of view of males. However, the movie tells a war story from female perspective. I'm always amazed of how a deep-story-movie like this one could change my perspective of so many things. I have a brand new perspective of war by watching this movie: From a woman's eyes, there is no ally or foe. Everyone's just running around with a gun.
